New Appointment at Para/Site Art Space

Para/Site Art Space announces the commencement of the appointment of Mr. Tobias Berger as the Executive Director and Curator for Para/Site Art Space. This signifies a new professional development in Para/Site strengthened by his 3-year appointment as curator. One of Bergerˇ¦s key objectives is to contribute to the current development of the Hong Kong arts scene, characterized by many artists but so few curators. This full-time position fills in the void in curatorial practice that specializes in contemporary arts in Hong Kong.  Under his expertise and experience, Berger will develop broader ways to examine the local arts and promote international exchanges and perspectives between the local arts scene and international art scene.

Tobias Berger was born in Germany in 1969 and was the Director of ARTSPACE New Zealand's key independent contemporary art institution. Prior to joining ARTSPACE in 2003, Berger was the artistic director of the 8th Baltic Triennial of International Arts in Lithuania and served as the curator at the Kunsthalle Fridericianum, Kassel, Germany.

He obtained a MA in Art History and Economics at Ruhr-Universitat Bochum, Germany and completed a Curatorial Training Programme in Amsterdam. Since then, he has curated over 50 projects and has written for various publications. In particular, Berger was the Commissioner for New Zealandˇ¦s group show participation at the 2004 Sao Paulo Biennial, titled ˇ§Remember New Zealandˇ¨. He was also a curator for the international section for the Art & Industry Arts Biennial, 2004 in Christchurch and recently curated a survey show about alternative Asian art spaces at ARTSPACE.
