Para/Site Central is the smallest alternative exhibition venue in Hong Kong. "Hosted" in the Hanart TZ Gallery, it will be, for the first time, the site of work-in-progress: "Sculpting in Light", the latest project of Tsang Tak-Ping, a Para/Site founding member well known for his site-specific installations using daily objects.

Mr Tsang's artist-in-residence project at Para/Site Central will last for 4 and half months, until March 2002. New progress will be presented the middle of every month. Accompanying commentaries written concurrently by Para/Site member Leung Chi-Wo will enhance the "progress". A reception celebrating the first phase of the project will be held on November 19th 2001, from 6 to 8 pm at Hanart TZ Gallery.

Light as an artistic element is an important element in Mr Tsang's work. However, its subtle aesthetics are often dwarfed by the strong overtones of local culture and history imbedded in the worn-out surfaces of his chosen objects. As a photographer, Mr Tsang's attention to light as both medium and metaphor in his visual presentations should not be overlooked. Personal stories mingle with collective memories in "Sculpting in Light". Named after the book Sculpting in Time by Russian film director Andrey Tarkovsky, this exhibition transcends mere sculpture of light.

Mr Tsang is an assistant professor in the School of Design at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has exhibited in Hong Kong, Taipei, Baguio, Bangkok, Tokyo, New York, Vienna and Hamburg.
